I think it’s canon that Mermaids don’t need mermen to hatch more mermaids.
Example: The fact it’s mentioned many times that the Mako Island Pod hasn’t seen a Merman for centuries BUT continually have more little mermaids.
However, this may not work in reverse
Theory: Mermen need Mermaids to have Mermen.
Example: Erik mentioned how he was from “a long line of Mermen,” implying a merman parent.
He also mentioned that mermen foster on land.
Not sure why, but considering he always knew what he was, I’m thinking this fostering happens after a small part of childhood so he would know how to protect himself and to fight off the moon spell.
Why would this imply they need mermaids?
For one, Erik was actively looking for them.
This could be out of curiosity, but the fact once he fell in love with Ondina his love bordered on an obsession with keeping her safe and happy seemed to be telling.
See Evie’s father’s destroyed air compressor and his need to control the Merman chamber.
Why would he go so far? Because he loved her and he needed her. He also mentioned she was the cutest mermaid he’d ever seen, meaning he’s tried to court other mermaids. Likely with far less success.
This leads to the how and why of this.
Mermaids seemed to have focused way more on magic and spells while Mermen seemed to focus on artifacts/inventions to enhance power.
This means the Mermaids would have figured out a way, likely with magic, to eliminate the absolute need for Mermen, but the Mermen didn’t seem to figure out the same.
This is also why little Mermen don’t seem to pop up randomly in a pod.
Ergo, Zac and Mimmi have a merman father, if my theory is correct.
Of course, a counter to this is the fact the siblings have a merman ancestor; if that was the case, then more mermen should have popped up in their line and indications are that this is not the case.
Though, Viridia knew about Zac’s existence. If my theory is correct it’s because there is only one way for a mermaid to have a merman child is by hatching it with a merman. Perhaps among her generation, it was known that Narissa had a Merman lover/spouse/mate.
I hypothesize this because Rita also seemed to know about Narissa having a son.
It would be why they’re so rare to see because few mermaids would probably agree to hatch children with a merman hence they also protect their sons by keeping them away from the ocean where the pods of Mermaids might try to take them out to protect themselves.
IT would also explain why if a Merman managed to woo a mermaid he would be borderline insane trying to keep her safe and stay with her.
Why did Narissa aka Mimmi and Zac’s mom leave?
Well, it might have something to do with whatever the Hell that Water Dragon thing is I keep seeing in pictures for season 3 or maybe she left for some other reason. Maybe for the same reason, Rita left, but she wanted her daughter to have a

life with the rest of the Pod. So, she chose love over family but made it so her children sort of had one another.
